Building footprints were edited by Zach Bodenner in fall 2021 in preparation for this project. Then data was transferred to GPI to create this feature class.

From GPI:

"To calculate rooftop solar potential, a set of suitability criteria were applied and calculated:

  • No solar may be built within 6 feet of the edge of the building rooftop (per OSHA and solar maintenance / installation requirements)

  • Building slope (pitch) and aspect (orientation to the sun) were both calculated. For slope, rooftops with a no slope were calculated as “flat” rooftops, which have a slightly larger suitable minimum square foot area for installation than roofs with a pitch. For aspect, any rooftop area oriented northeast, north, or northwest were all considered not suitable (too few direct hours of sunlight).

Once analyzed, the resulting solar insolation raster was used to calculate total solar potential"

    Abbreviations:

    W - Watt

    KW - Kilowatt

    MW - Megawatt

    GW - Gigawatt

    WH - Watt Hour

    KWH - Kilowatt Hour

    MWH - Megawatt Hour

    Attribute Information:

SolGenWH: Solar generation potential (in Wh), accounting for a system panel efficiency of 13% and that the kWh generation to kW capacity ratio was 1300

SystemCost: Estimated dollar value for system based on size, for Minnesota average per watt cost for solar panel & installation at $2.74; estimate assumed that only 75% of max system capacity was going to be installed per system, or for larger systems that economies of scale would provide per watt savings

CO2Avaoided_lbs: Estimated avoided CO2e emissions in lbs (from Xcel 2017 community energy reports, which estimates 802 lbs / MWh when solar replaces conventional grid)
